FAQ

What is SCI?
The Society of Composers, Inc. is a professional society dedicated to the promotion of composition, performance, understanding and dissemination of new and contemporary music. Members include composers and performers both in and outside of academia interested in addressing concerns for national and regional support of compositional activities. The organizational body of the Society is comprised of a National Council, co-chairs who represent regional activities, and the Executive Committee.

How do I know if I'm in "Region VI"?
Region VI is comprised of the following states:
Arkansas
Kansas
Missouri
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas

Is this conference limited to that region?
No.  Anyone can submit works for possible submission.  Region VI members will receive priority when choosing works to be performed.

When/Where is the conference again?
The Society of Composers, Inc., Region VI Conference will be held February 26-28, at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Who can submit scores?
Scores will be accepted from all composers. Selected composers must join the Society of Composers, Inc. before their work will be performed (seewww.societyofcomposers.org). Composers from Region VI (AR, KS, MO, NE, OK, TX) will receive preference in score selection. Composers whose works are selected for performance during the conference must be members in good standing and must also attend the conference.

Can students submit scores?
Submissions from student composers are strongly encouraged and welcomed.

Are Project 21 composers (OCU Students) given any preference?
No.  Project 21 composers will not be allowed to submit scores for general review.  All "general review"  submissions will be from outside the OCU composition program.

I have my own performers if my score is selected.  Is that OK?
Submissions from composers who can supply their own performers are welcomed, but not necessary.

Is Electronic music accepted at this conference?
Electronic/Electro-acoustic and multimedia works are welcomed. Specificity in your needs for these compositions is ideal, as we must make sure we are able to accommodate your needs.

Are there any time restrictions to my piece?
Submitted works may be of any duration, but works under 15 minutes will be given higher preference.

Are you recording the performances? Can I get a recording?
Yes, all performances will be recorded.  Composers will receive a recording of their piece after the conference. Other requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

I think my piece requires a conductor.  Do I need to provide a conductor?
Chamber pieces requiring a conductor may be submitted. A conductor from Oklahoma City University will be chosen, but rehearsal time will be a factor in the selection process of the work.

How many pieces can I submit?
Please submit up to three compositions for consideration.

What should I submit with my score?
For each work, submit a score, separate CD recording, program notes, and a contact sheet with the composers name, address, telephone number, email address, a list of works submitted with durations, and a brief bio. Electronic music will be broadcast up to a 4.1 diffused surround playback system [from a 2-channel (stereo) source]. For the selection process, please submit a DVD or CD. For multimedia works, please submit DVD format for consideration. If you wish your materials returned to you, please include an SASE. Submissions that do not contain an SASE will become permanent additions to the Bass School of Music Library.

Who is deciding what scores are chosen?
Selections will be made by the ensemble directors and performers, in coordination with the conference hosts. Playability and available rehearsal time will be a factor in all selection decisions. Composers will be notified No Later than November 2, 2008.

Is the conference covering fees or costs that may come up in the performance of my piece?
No. Selected composers must provide all required performance materials. Oklahoma City University, and/or SCI will not pay rental costs or other fees relating to performance materials.
